Starting Therapy: What to Expect

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. This section will walk you through scheduling your first appointment, understanding insurance, and what to expect during your initial sessions to help you feel confident and prepared.

01

Schedule a Consultation

The first step is simply reaching out. You can schedule a time that works best for you through our online booking system or by giving us a quick call. If you’re unsure where to start, we also offer brief phone consultations to answer any initial questions, discuss insurance, and help you decide if we’re the right fit for your needs.

02

Insurance and Payment

We accept many insurance companies (such as BCBS, Cigna, Aetna, and more) or you may bill out-of-network. If you do not have insurance coverage, that is okay, you can pay out of pocket. If you are paying out of pocket, the No Surprises Act, ensures transparency and preventing unexpected charges when paying out of pocket.

During your consultation appointment health insurance and costs will be discussed.

We encourage you to contact your health insurance prior to your first appointment as they can provide the most up-to-date coverage information that they might not always share with with therapists.

Helpful questions to ask your insurance provider are:

1. What is the deductible?

2. How much of that deductible has been met of today?

3. Does the deductible have to be met prior?

4. Is there a coinsurance or copay required?

5. Is there a maximum number of sessions per year allowed?

6. Do you cover CPT code 90791, 90837, and 90834 for outpatient psychotherapy sessions without requiring a prior authorization?

03

Your First Session

Your first virtual session lasts about an hour and is focused on getting to know each other. We'll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you're hoping to work on, and what you’d like to get out of the process. There’s no pressure to have all the answers, we’ll take things at your pace and figure it out together.

04

Ongoing Therapy

Most sessions are around 50 to 60 minutes and take place virtually, which means you can join from wherever you feel most comfortable. Ongoing sessions are guided by your needs. Some days might feel lighter, others might be more reflective or emotional. We’ll work together to track your progress, adjust your goals as needed, and explore new tools or insights that support your growth. Whether you're looking to manage stress, heal from the past, or simply feel more like yourself again, therapy is a place to show up just as you are.
